Tooth Pain in North Brunswick? Here's What to Do — and Where to Go

Dental pain has a way of showing up at the worst possible moments — the night before a big presentation, on a Saturday morning, or in the middle of a family dinner. When it hits, you need answers fast. If you're in North Brunswick or the surrounding Middlesex County area, here's exactly what to do.

WHAT COUNTS AS A DENTAL EMERGENCY? Not every toothache requires a 911-level response, but several situations do need same-day professional attention. You should contact an emergency dentist right away if you're experiencing:
• Severe, throbbing tooth pain that doesn't subside with over-the-counter pain relievers
• A knocked-out or broken tooth (time is critical — ideally within 30–60 minutes)
• A dental abscess or swelling in the jaw, gums, or face (can be dangerous if untreated)
• A lost crown or filling that's leaving a tooth exposed and sensitive
• Bleeding gums that won't stop after an injury
• A cracked tooth that causes sharp pain when biting

WHAT TO DO WHILE YOU WAIT
Before you can get to the dentist, these steps can reduce pain and prevent further damage: For a Knocked-Out Tooth This is a true time emergency. Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it with water without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If that's not comfortable, store it in a small container of milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to a dentist within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth. For Severe Tooth Pain Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to reduce inflammation. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen (follow package directions). Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gum — this is a common myth that can actually cause tissue damage. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. For a Dental Abscess An abscess is a pocket of infection that can spread to your jaw, neck, or even your bloodstream if left untreated. Signs include a severe, persistent toothache, fever, a pimple-like bump on the gums, or facial swelling. Rinse with warm saltwater and call a dentist immediately — this is not a situation to wait out. For a Lost Crown or Broken Tooth If your crown fell out, try to keep it and bring it to your appointment. Some crowns can be re-cemented. You can temporarily protect the exposed tooth with dental cement (available at most pharmacies) until you're seen. Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods on that side.

HOW MUCH DOES EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE COST IN NJ? Cost is one of the biggest reasons people delay emergency dental care — and that delay almost always makes things worse (and more expensive) in the long run. At CosmicSmiles Dental, we accept most major PPO insurance plans, which typically cover a significant portion of emergency procedures. For patients without insurance, we offer transparent fee-for-service pricing and can discuss payment options before any work begins. We never want cost to be the reason someone suffers through dental pain.

PREVENTING DENTAL EMERGENCIES The best emergency is the one that never happens. Regular checkups every six months allow Dr. Sudha to catch small problems — a hairline crack, early decay, a loose filling — before they escalate into 2am emergencies. If you've been putting off your checkup, consider this your sign. Book a routine visit at cosmicsmilesdental.com or call 732-247-4200.
